8 Toys Both Dads and Kids Can Enjoy

Get your wallet, your kid, and make a run for it. It’s time to buy some toys and some fun time.

For the love of all that is holy. Put away that tablet or smartphone, and get down to getting some serious fun with your kid. They’ll survive a few hours away from Minecraft, and you’ll be ok as well if you skip that EverWing session. Nowadays, when you hear someone mention the word ‘toys’, a big action figure collector usually pops in your mind with their mint condition sealed boxes and online forum debates. But it’s time to reconnect with your kid and relive those innocent and joyous days of playing. Here are some items that hopefully will help you and your child get that much needed dose of F-U-N.

Ultimate Lightning McQueen by Sphero

If you’ve got a kid who loves cars, chances are this cooler than cool gadget will rock their itsy-bitsy socks off. Sphero, the tech wizards who gave adult nerds robotic toys like the vastly popular BB-8 robot have done something that will amaze kids and adults alike. They have the Ultimate Lightning McQueen remote controlled car. But it’s not just simply a typical RC car. Sphero and Pixar have taken it up a notch and given this four-wheel wonder: animated eyes, an animatronic mouth, and an emotive suspension. This will be the most sought-after toy that will burn a hole through your wallet and possibly through your soul. Good luck Dads!

Nintendo Switch

Sure, it’s great to have a PS4 or an Xbox. But if you really want to get some hang time with the kiddies, the Nintendo Switch is still a very cool contender for a console choice. The one game you must get… Just Dance 2017. What makes this version of the popular dancing game interesting, is because of the portability of the Switch, this makes you essentially a Dance-Anywhere-With-Anyone-Anytime funk machine. Trust us, your kids will love the Switch and you’ll have them doing cardio, burning all that chocolate and sweets they ate under your watch, and hopefully going beddy-bye after some intense and sweet dance routines. You’re welcome. Now limber up, old man!

Tamiya Mini 4WD

ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

There’s nothing like a blast from the past that helps connect a child and his dawdling father. And the 90’s is a treasure trove of nostalgia that will have most Gen X Papas running to the stores to stock up and throw down with their offspring. And possibly the best 90’s item to make a strong comeback, the Tamiya Mini 4WD. While not technologically as exciting as drones or RC cars, our Japanese bros have somehow still been able to make adults and children curious and addicted to these. With the promise of customization, tinkering, and of course some races for healthy competition, the Tamiya Mini 4WD is a welcome addition to any toy chest.

Beyblade Spinning Top Toys

It’s a top. A rather expensive top, but it looks awesome. It’s like the Terminator grabbed something to kill you from his armpit and inadvertently came up with something that can give you and your child hours of fun. With no killing. But on a serious note, Beyblade is an exciting way to teach your kids about building and customizing. As well as some physics and yeah I guess, science and stuff. But again, seriously, Beyblade has a ton of accessories to build your own personal top, a mini-stadium for you to battle it out, and even a fun couple of anime series to get all emotional about. Ganbatte!!!

Play-Doh

Nothing irritates me more than clay, most especially expensive clay which is what Play-Doh is. The way it gets under your nails and develops a close relationship with your favorite carpet. How eventually, in some way or form, your child will fabricate an ever so familiar clump of Play-Doh, present it to you with a proud smile, and say “Here Papa. Poopoo.” All you can do is smile back and grit your teeth while internally cursing the gods of Play-Doh. But despite all that, children love Play-Doh. It’s a creative medium, it’s child friendly, non-toxic, and with all the accessories and variants it’s really a great way to spend some fun time with your child and expand their creativity. So, hooray for Play-Doh! I hate you.

Nerf N-Strike Elite Hyperfire Blaster

ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

If your kid is old enough and you’re not adverse to toys that look a wee bit like firearms, the Nerf series of dart guns is always a great way for them to run around the house or even outdoors and sweat it out. The Nerf N-Strike Elite Hyperfire Blaster (we know, it’s a mouthful) is one of the newer models. Capable of shooting 5 darts per second and with a range of 90 feet, you and your child will enjoy all the Wild West scenarios, Cops-and-Robbers chases, and re-enactments of Heat and Die Hard until the batteries run out or some vases have eventually been smashed to bits.

Pie Face!

Things are going to get a little messy. And it’s perfectly fine. Pie Face! is a hilarious game that will pit you against your child in a fun battle of sheer absurdity and suspense. All this game needs is some whipped cream, then put a healthy dab on the “hand”, and then simply start turning the handles. To win, you must score 25 points. You score a point for every time you turn the handle without getting pie-faced. Sounds silly? Of course. Is it a lot of fun? Definitely! This random splat attack machine will give your kids the giggles and make you see their beautiful smiles as you make a fool of yourself with a face full of whipped cream.

PlayMobil

Not a fan of Lego? Do you want something with a little more panache? Playmobil is the answer for you. While almost as costly as Lego, Playmobil does have the same fun factor. It may not offer the possibility of going all out and creative as Lego, but Playmobil’s appeal is driven by the beauty of its construction and the details they put in. Your kids will still be able to enjoy the building and role playing of Playmobil characters. Plus, they don’t hurt as much when you step on them. But all in all, Playmobil offers children and even adults a great collection of figures and buildings.
