SEA Games: This Filipina Swimming Contender Trained Under Michael Phelps’ Coach

The 21-year-old Anne Isleta trained under Coach Bob Bowman.

Anne Isleta has been swimming competitively since she was six years old. Although she grew up in the U.S. and has won championships for the state of California, she has decided to compete for the Philippines in the 30th SEA Games on November 30.

“I’m full Filipino and I want to go back to my roots,” said Isleta in an interview with ABS-CBN. Isleta was born to parents who are Filipinos.

The 21-year-old Isleta trained under Bob Bowman, the very same coach that helped “Golden Boy” Michael Phelps win the most gold medals in Olympics history. Phelps has set a stratospheric 39 world records in swimming, and holds 23 Olympic gold medals—the most anyone has ever had.

“I’m very grateful to have him as a coach. He is very experienced. I think I have learned a lot from him,” Isleta shares with ABS-CBN.

According to Isleta, Bowman is a tough coach who knows how to push his trainees to give their best, but that’s on the professional side. She says the Bowman knows how to balance.

“He knows what he is doing. He is very specific in many areas and has everything planned to reach a goal. I like that. It shows how we can reach our goal. He is very experienced and he has done this for a long time,” said Isleta. “I love the Philippines and I believe it is important to stay true to who you are. That’s me being Filipino and that is who I am. I want to represent the country in the SEA Games and possibly the Olympics.”
