This Farm in Calamba Has Over 34 Peacock Breeds and Other Rare Bird Breeds
There is a very unusual farm in the city of Calamba, Laguna. Here, exotic birds are bred and raised. In one section of the farm is an aviary housing 35 different breeds of peacock. Bird enthusiast and businessman Joel Alcasid showcases his colorful feathered friends, which he breeds and sells at the Alcasid Aviary and Farm.Â
His farm specializes in raising different exotic breeds, like the Blue Peafowl and the Purple Spaulding Peahen. Aside from peafowls, Alcasid also breeds various types of chickens, geese, guinea fowls, etc.Â
Among the most magnificent birds in the aviary are the white onagadori longtails, a breed of chicken with tail feathers that measure more than a meter long. The farm also has the enigmatic Indonesian ayam cemani, a very rare breed of chicken that has a dominant gene that causes hyperpigmentation (fibromelanosis), resulting in a deep-black coloration. This dark pigment is not only present in the feathers but is also present in deep down in the skin and the meat of the chicken.Â
