Reports of deliberate cutting of fiber optic cables in Laguna have become so rampant that they’re costing PLDT millions in network restoration costs and inconvenient downtime to its many customers.
In a statement on Thursday, the telco shared that a recent report of a group of men intentionally cut and damaged PLDT fiber optic cables in Laguna.

The company said it has also received persistent reports nationwide of sabotage of PLDT fiber optic cables, causing outages and hardship to subscribers. It said it has already recorded more than 200 incidents in relation to similar activities.
“PLDT and Smart are working closely with local government units and our local authorities to ensure the safety and security of our network equipment, which are vital to the unhampered delivery of our fiber-to-the-home, LTE and 5G services to our customers,” said Roderick S. Santiago, PLDT Network Head.
The company urged customers to stay vigilant against illegal activities that lead to interruption in their internet connection. It also asked asked customers to “help us by reporting similar activities in their respective areas and barangays.”
“Together, we can ensure that our communities can stay safe and connected,” Santiago said.
The PLDT Group has a portfolio of 803,000 kilometers of fiber assets nationwide.
Although cable cuts are common during natural disasters, calamities, and construction works, illegal activities by unscrupulous individuals also cause fiber cuts, which lead to widespread service interruptions.
