As It Turns Out, July (Unsurprisingly) Was the Hottest Month in History

If breaking the daily heat index record a bunch of times wasn't enough to scare us, then this piece of information will: July 2023 has officially been confirmed to be the hottest month on record ever for the world.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the said global average temperature for the month was 16.95 degrees Celsius. This beat out the previous record that was recorded in 2019.

“It has not been this warm, combining observational records and paleoclimate records, for the last 120,000 years,” Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, explained in a statement.

She added: “The global average temperature for July 2023 is confirmed to be the highest on record for any month – the month is estimated to have been around 1.5 degrees [Celsius; 2.7F] warmer than the average for 1850 to 1900."

We may recall that last July, global air temperatures and ocean surface temperatures were at all-time highs. Since the late 1800s, the globe has warmed 1.2 degrees Celsius more. Most of this horrible trend has been chalked up to the burning of fossil fuels.

Thanks to this, heat waves have not only become hotter but have also lasted longer and have grown more frequent over time. Weather conditions have intensified because of this, leading to worse storms and flooding around the world.

It's becoming a more dire situation by the year, it seems. This 2023 also happens to be the third warmest year so far. And it isn't even September yet.
