Here's Why So Many Men Fear Having a Female President

Hillary Clinton was a highly qualified candidate during her presidential run in 2016, but the hatred surrounding her was unprecedented. Why were there so many chants of "lock her up" and "Hillary for prison"? The Atlantic rolled out a short video adapted from Peter Beinart's "Fear of a Female President" that succinctly sums up how all this hate actually translates to sexism—and a fear from fragile men of being emasculated.

According to studies back then, 52 percent of white men held a highly unfavorable view of Hillary Clinton, while only 32 percent of white men held a highly unfavorable view of Obama when he was running back in 2012. This, according to Beinart, may be due to the Precarious Manhood Theory, which posits that manhood "is something that must be won and defended while womenhood is more fixed."

Men respond "recklessly and aggressively" when their manhood is threatened, and being subordinated by a female boss is one of the emasculating situations that men fear worst. In other words, the people who shouted for Clinton to be locked up are most likely the same people who most feared being emasculated. Oh, the irony.
