Pope Emeritus Benedict Is 'Very Sick,' Says Pope Francis

Pope Francis is asking the world for prayers for his predecessor, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, 95, whose health reportedly deteriorated in a matter of hours on Wednesday, December 28, 2022. 

“I would like to ask all of you for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict, who, in silence, is sustaining the church," Pope Francis said after his general audience earlier Wednesday. 

“He is very sick, asking the Lord to console and sustain him in this witness of love for the church, until the end,” he added.

Formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI became the first Pope in over 600 years to resign in 2013, citing old age and health reasons. 

According to the Vatican, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI is under constant medical care. Ever since his resignation in 2013, the Pope emeritus has elected a life of silent prayer, and has avoided public appearances. He has formed a close friendship with Pope Francis.

Almost 10 years since he resigned as Pope, Benedict's health has continued to deteriorate, but his health suddenly worsened in the last 48 hours, according to an NBC report. Benedict is the oldest pope to be elected at 78 years old after he succeeded Pope John Paul II in 2005.
