Dior's New Combat Boots Pay Homage to a Forgotten Subculture
Dior presents the Dior Buffalo collection, a new line of footwear from the creative mind of Kim Jones, inspired by the Buffalo Movement of the English designer Ray Petri. For those who don't know, or for those who are too young to know, the Buffalo Movement that inspired this collection was a cultural phenomenon related to fashion and music that took place in the 1980s, mainly in the United Kingdom. Ray Petri was a key figure associated with this movement and his innovative style, characterized by an eclectic and rebellious approach to fashion, broke the traditional barriers between high-end fashion and streetwear, having a significant impact on the aesthetics and culture of the time.
What did the phenomenon consist of? A distinctive feature of the Buffalo Movement was the use of layering, wearing several pieces of clothing in a creative way. This included oversized jackets, vests, shirts, sweaters, and other pieces layered in innovative and unexpected ways, as well as the fusion of styles from different cultures and subcultures: elements of hip-hop, punk, mod, and workwear fashion were uniquely combined to create a distinctive and unconventional look. We also owe the Buffalo Movement its crucial role in bringing elements of streetwear into ready-to-wear fashion. Outerwear, cargo trousers, and sports shoes had become an integral part of the movement's standard wardrobe. The accessories were also very important. Among these were hats, sunglasses, chains, and belts. In short, this subculture contributed to defining the Eighties as an era of experimentation and hybridization of styles.
