New Balance's New RC30 Is Old New Balance at Its Best
Well son, it's been a bumper crop for New Balance this summer. After a successful rollout of the new 9060—a swollen ode to millennial running trainers—the Anglo-American marque has released the all dancing, all sprinting RC30, and it reaches even further back than the Y2k revival.
Inspired by the New Balance archives, the recently launched RC30 is an update of a low-profile racer. So the sort of pair that'd carry a wiry American athlete to a gold medal (and the rest of us deeper into Cold War with the Soviet Union). In marginally less terrifying times, that means a minimalist silhouette that'll work far beyond Munich '72.
The RC30's exact predecessor is the New Balance Trackster. The self-styled 'world's first running shoe' was first released in 1960, and the slightly bowling alley maroon/white colorway is a far cry from modern racers. But look closer, and the RC30's genetics are all there: a rippled sole, a smooth design and a focus on comfort.
The paint job's nicer this time round, too. Now available in blue, grey and off-white (sorry, beg your pardon: 'moonbeam'), the RC30 is set to drop further colorways over the coming months. Then, there's an official collab set for a 18 July release with Atlanta creator/Soul Train disco suit revivalist Donald Glover. It's the same RC30, but available in a canary yellow with suede accents throughout. And it is very, very nice.
A new New Balance that looks a lot like the old New Balance? Summer's looking real good, son!
