How Different Can a P5,000 Haircut Be From Your Corner Barbershop?

Lavish and specialized care by masters gets you a cut that suits you right now.

To have your hair cut and colored at JuRo Salon Exclusif is not cheap. In fact, JuRo’s master cutter Jude Hipolito and master colorist Rose Velasco have been considered as the most expensive hairstylists in the country since the early 2000s until today (a men’s haircut by Jude is at P5,000 while hair color by Rose starts at P4,950). But even if the costs are high, there are many reasons why generations of clients still fly in from other parts of the world or the Philippines and then patiently drive through traffic for an appointment at their quiet salon in Bonifacio Global City.

All Details Considered

Your first visit entails a very thorough hair consultation with Jude and Rose. They’ll consider many things—preferences, hair condition, growth pattern, texture and density, previous and current cut and color, natural hair color, skin tone, face shape, head shape, body proportions, lifestyle, and home maintenance—to determine the most suitable hairstyle. For the pair, a great cut, color, and style is the one that suits you best at this time.

Jude and Rose's edge over barbers and other hairstylists in the country are simply their skills. Both are perfectionists who pay close attention to details. They can understand the concerns and needs of clients and see what kind of hairstyle will best suit each person. They are also backed by a solid Vidal Sassoon education, years of local and international hair experience, and yearly trainings by the world's best hairdressers. The cup of specialty coffee brewed by Jude himself is just a bonus.

Masters Deliver Results

The guys who go to JuRo are successful men who want only the best—even if there is a price that comes with. They expect results: They’re looking for a bespoke cut or color (or both) that looks good not only right after they leave the salon, but every day thereafter. They also want a style that shows off their best features and even hides their weaknesses.

Actor Jake Macapagal (from HBO Asia’s supernatural series Half Worlds) gets his textured layered haircut from Jude every month. “I chose JuRo because it is very rare that you find a precise cutter who listens [to you]. If you want to get a barber’s cut, you go to one. If you need a specific style for a role or extra maintenance and care, you go to a salon,” he says.

Precise and Natural Cuts

The actor has thick, coarse, slightly wavy hair, and like men his age, a slight thinning in some areas on top. Each month, Jude cuts his hair to just the right length and shape for a style that does not look like he just walked out of a salon. “When you come out of the salon, no one will notice you had a haircut, but if you pay attention, you will see the details of his genius,” adds Jake.

When he has an acting role, Jude also prepares his hair to suit his role and maintains that cut for consistency. “I’m am growing my hair naturally… I’m also not very fussy with my hair. I use [natural shampoo] with no fragrance and condition my hair twice a month. To keep it in place, I just put hair product,” he says.

Bespoke Colors and Treatments

JuRo also has a lot of male clients who get their hair colored and treated by Rose. Compared to the coloring services at barbers or other salons, her treatments are quite unique. For instance, Rose keeps some of the gray or white hair to keep things age-appropriate. She also customizes the formulation for natural-looking hair (as opposed to just coloring hair black, which just looks like a wig) or bespoke hair that complements the skintone. The salon also offers other treatments such as anti-frizz, anti-thinning, anti-dandruff, hair straightening or relaxing, and customized deep conditioning. Men usually come back for their cut and color every four to six weeks, though there are those who come every two to three weeks, too.

So what makes it all worth it? “Jude takes time to listen to his clients. I think this is important,” says Jake. “The most talented people I’ve met around the world are very humble. Jude and Rose plus their skillful crew are what make JuRo, and they are what makes it priceless.”
