Richard Madden Keeps It Simple When It Comes to Personal Style
Fresh, courageous, seductive: these are the three words Calvin Klein has chosen to describe its scent Defy. From those words, it makes total sense that the brand called on Richard Madden to be the star of the fragrance's campaign. And it continues with the introduction of Calvin Klein Defy Eau de Parfum.
Defy Parfum, the follow-up to Calvin Klein Defy Eau de Toilette, is a celebration and expansion of the journey of defiance. (The Eau de Parfum has a warmer and darker twist to it.) Dressed in Calvin Klein's iconic jeans and a timeless white t-shirt, Madden appears in a series of "vulnerable, self-reflecting, and defying moments that culminate into a courageous leap of faith, a symbolic metaphor for personal defiance and daring to take risks."

With a TV spot directed by Jonas Lindstroem, the filmmaker and photographer behind Peggy Gou's "Starry Night," the campaign isn't your typical one because, as Madden says, he was able to "play around with things visually." We spoke with the actor to talk about how the campaign came together, why simple is better when it comes to personal style, and the importance of fragrances (it's a balancing act!).
On working with Calvin Klein
It's been an honor. You know, it's always been a brand that I looked up to since I was younger so it's really great to be part of the family.
On how the campaign came together
It was a really exciting few days. So often as an actor, you get to really just play around with things visually, rather than it being so scripted. So we had a great time shooting in London, both in the studio and around the city. So that was a really, really good, fun few days.
On the importance of fragrances
I think fragrances are very important. I find it can affect my mood quite a lot. I honestly like more on the leather side of things with a hint of citrus. I feel if you balance the scent out with a little bit of citrus that can actually enhance those darker with your nose. So, I like something that you can wear in the evening and in the daytime which Defy does.
On personal style
My own personal style is very, very simple. I like to keep things very kind of clean lines and just good tailoring. I don't actually wear a lot of colors. So, that kind of makes it a little simpler.
