Mattresses And Artworks Are Among Top Items Stolen From Luxury Hotels, Survey Reveals

If you’ve ever pinched hotel toiletries from a guest room, you’re not in the minority, and your crime is certainly not as bad as other guests', it seems. A survey by Wellness Heaven asked 1,157 hoteliers which items were most commonly taken home and the results were shocking. Majority of the respondents listed towels as the top answer, followed by bathrobes, hangers, and pens, in that order. What’s most bizarre is that large, expensive items made the list, too. Artworks, tablet computers, coffee makers, television sets, phones, and mattresses ranked in the top 20.

It’s also noted that guests staying at five-star hotels were more inclined to take home the expensive items, as compared to thieves checked-in at four-star accommodations. “The probability of high-quality TV sets being stolen in five-star hotels is nine times higher in comparison to the 4-star segment,” the report says. The same goes for mattresses and tablets.

The study also noted some of the more peculiar items that went missing. In a hotel close to Salzburg, entire sauna benches were found missing, while a hotelier in France was shocked to find a guest attempting to steal a stuffed boar’s head. The items range from oversized objects such as a grand piano to something as small as room numbers. How they manage to get away with these thefts remain a mystery to us all.
