The Two New MPVs from Hyundai are Serious Contenders

Hyundai Motor Philippines has introduced the new Custin and Stargazer X to the local market.

Hyundai Motor Philippines, Inc. (HMPH) has unveiled two MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicles) models during a launch in Sta. Elena, Laguna on Monday (October 16).  The new Custin and Stargazer X add to the growing number of Hyundai’s MPVs along with the Starex and Grand Starex, and the Staria and Stargazer, and gives the Korean automaker a strong foothold in the highly competitive segment.

The Stargazer X, which made its debut at the Gaiikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in Jakarta, features a black rooftop with rails and a new 3D stacked front grille. It has the brand’s signature H-shaped taillights surrounded with black lamp bezels, giving them an even more distinct look. It also comes with a new set of 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels.

Inside, the Stargazer X is accented with a new piano black dashboard panel, red stitching on the black seats and an updated overhead console lamp. It has a total of 585 liters of space capacity configurable second and third row seats, along with more flexibility for hauling cargo. It also has the longest wheelbase and body in its segment.

The X series is based on the Stargazer GLS premium variant, so the model contains all its best-in-class convenience and tech features, including Remote Engine Start and Window Control, six chargers, including a wireless charger in the first row. The Stargazer X is designed with 30 storage solutions, including a seatback folding table. For added safety, it features a front parking distance warning integrate with its Hyundai SmartSense, the brand’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).

The X is now considered to be the top-of-the-line variant for the Stargazer and retails for P1.348 million. There are three color options: Creamy White Pearl, Magnetic Silver Metallic, and Dragon Red Pearl.

Meanwhile, the Custin is the newest nameplate introduced by the brand in the Philippine market. Using the theme “luxuries of life,” Hyundai promises exceptional comfort, safety and technology for Custin owners. The brand’s Sensous Sportiness design concept includes a parametric diamond design front grille with hidden daytime running lights that carries over to the sides and into the turn signal lamps. The door handles and sill trims and have a pair of aircraft wing-like taillights fitted with special 18-inch dynamic blade aluminum alloy wheels.

Inside, the Custin has a slimmer cockpit and flatter floor easier entry. It has a ground clearance of 170mm that not only allows more convenient access but gives a higher ride height. The top-of-the-line variant comes with a seven-seat layout with two captains chairs on the second row, and a 10-way power seat adjustment that can be adjusted to the “zero gravity” position. It also comes with other creature comforts like dual sunroof, rear curtains, and backseat tables with tablet stand.

The Custin is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo-charged Smartstream engine that’s mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It’s rated at 170ps and has a maximum torque of 253 Nm. It also has the Hyundai SmartSense safety suite that includes Forward-Collision Avoidance (FCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Following Assist (LFA), Blind-spot Collision Avoidance (BCA), Safe Exit Assist, High Beam Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Rear Cross-traffic Collision Avoidance Assist and Rear Occupant Alert. The Custin has four drive modes: Comfort, Sport, Eco and Smart mode, which automatically adjusts to either of the first three based on driving habits and conditions.

The new Custin has a starting price of P1.770 million and comes in two variants.
