MG Just Teased This Electric Cabriolet Sports Car

MG Philippines threw a media thanksgiving party dubbed Revel (with emphasis on the letters EV) in early December. It was a subtle hint on what was in store. The brand caught attendees by surprise by teasing its first-ever soft top electric sportscar, the MG Cyberster, as well as the MG One crossover. 

The Cyberster is the first nameplate built on SAIC’s SIGMA platform. SIGMA stands for SAIC Motor Intelligent Global Architecture. No specs or details were given but the MG One should have a hefty 1.5-liter turbocharged engine or possibly a PHEV (plug-in electric vehicle) but we’ll know for sure in the months to come. Chinese government-owned SAIC Motors is, in turn, the owner of MG and put up a local office to handle MG vehicles starting this year.

Felix Jiang, SAIC Philippines’ president said that these two models as well as a few others will officially make their debut at the 2024 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS). SAIC will also have one of the largest booths at the SMX Convention Center for the first big auto show next year.

MG is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, and it comes at an interesting time of the ever-evolving landscape modern mobility, where EVs are gathering momentum even in the Philippines.

The last MG sportscar was the MG TF, which was a nimble and sprite and aptly sized British roadster. The Cyberster on the other hand, is more like a grand touring sports car, but promises a thrilling blend of performance, innovation, and futuristic design.

It its gorgeous pair of scissor doors, the Cyberster's silhouette screams “supercar” but shows inspiration from the classic MG roadsters of the past. Its distinctive “Kammback” design, swooping hood, raked windscreen, LED headlights, and interactive "Magic Eye" headlights are a blend of something old and something new, with an electric powertrain that promises quick acceleration and speed.

The Cyberster is expected to come in rear-wheel and four-wheel drive and will come in various battery ranges as well. However, there is no final Philippine-spec Cyberster as of this writing.

There are also no price indications yet, but if the Cyberster will be priced somewhere south of P3 million, it should fare well and will quickly gain acceptance even to hardcore sportscar enthusiasts.

Judging from test drive reviews by European motoring journalists, the MG Cyberster does not disappoint and it is something to look forward to. We’ll know more at the upcoming MIAS 2024, which is happening on April 4 to 7, 2024 at the World Trade Center and SMX Convention Center.
