Jo Koy Gets Standing Ovation in First Stage Show After the Golden Globes
In true comedic fashion, Filipino-American standup comedian, actor and host Jo Koy is dusting off the criticisms with his self-deprecating sense of humor. Putting the setback aside, he's grabbing the mic, hitting the road anew, and turning the world into his own punchline.
Jo Koy’s first standup show following the Golden Globes took place just a few days ago on a bone-chilling negative seven degrees Celsius night at the 3,100-seat Stifel Theatre in St. Louis, reported Variety. The now world-famous comedian may have arrived late due to the frosty weather, but the crowd’s welcome was notably warm.
According to Variety, as the comedian took the stage, he “was met with thunderous applause of support and a standing ovation.” Elated, Koy told the audience, “This big hug that you gave me is all I need, swear to god. Fucking whirlwind, goddamn.”

Addressing his critics, the 52-year-old comedian defended his style of comedy in a tough room like the Golden Globes and appealed to the audience to show some tolerance: “Lot a marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we fucking laugh at ourselves?” The crowd erupted in applause, and a member of the audience shouted in support of the comedian, “Fuck ‘em!”
When the audience responded with a chorus of audible nods, he chimed in with his comedic encore, “I got a feeling none of you motherf—ers watched it, and I’m kind of happy. Oh, my God. It feels good to live in this country. We get to say what we want to say. Don’t be apologetic about it at all. Be able to … speak your mind.”
But Jo Koy couldn’t help also venting out his frustration. “Here in St. Louis, [you’ve got] people that listen to you, understand you, and understand we’re not all out to attack each other. It’s stupid in LA.”
He delivered his signature comedic banter and his fans and supporters cheered on. In evident delight, Jo Koy remarked, “Oh God, this is fun. I haven’t laughed in four days. I’m so happy. You guys make me so happy.”
Reflecting on his recent comedic hiccup, Koy tossed out some nuggets of life: “You’re allowed to fail. Fail as much as you can. Just make sure you get the f— back up. F— up. Risk. Take a risk. Without any risk, you’re never gonna know if anything’s possible.”
The “Joy Koy World Tour” runs through May while his new special comes out on Netflix this year.
