Maricar Reyes Finally Opens Up About Her 2009 Scandal: 'There Are Still People Who Are Disrespectful'
Maricar Reyes has finally opened up about, according to her, the "darkest chapter of my life" that happened 13 years ago in her new memoir. The actress didn't directly refer to the specifics of the personal crisis, but the public remembers her involvement in a sex scandal back in 2009. It even reached the senate, and ruined her reputation.
Reyes admits she kept quiet about the issue, but she brought it along with her for many years. She says it's why she didn't want to give advice to people going through something. "Kahit 2013, I was married, and mukha naman akong okay, there’s still a lot of stuff inside me na hindi ko pa nawo-work out, she says. "Parang things were not as clear to me enough to teach [other people]."

Reyes got married to singer Richard Poon on June 9, 2013. After getting married, several women wrote to her and shared what they were going through. She says, "They started to tell me really heartbreaking stories. Talagang nag-o-open up sila sa akin… usually ang mga questions nila, ‘How do I forgive?’ How do I get over my own crisis?’"
Though she wanted to help, she didn't know how if she was the right person as she still had a personal crisis. This is what made her decide to write a book. She calls the memoir a "very real, very personal" one. "There are a lot of things here na hindi ko sini-share in interviews and such, 'coz I really want to show people my process," she says.
The memoir is a way for Reyes to thank her mentors who helped her rise up through "real talk."Â The actress details her healing process in the memoir with the goal of helping anyone who reads the book with the problems in their lives.
"So it took a long time—from 2009 from the start of the bad thing that happened to me publicly, until 2022," she says. "It took 12 years to write this book." She admits that there are still people that mock her about her past, but she says that she's stable right now.
"Kasi ako nga, di ba, 12 years bago ako naging okay, enough to really talk about it. There are still people who are disrespectful with their comments and whatever […] Ngayon lang ako nagkaroon ng stability to just, ‘Okay, e, ganyan ka, e. Anong magagawa natin?’" she says.
Reyes wishes that her book helps people experiencing a personal crisis. "There’s really a process, and don’t be too hard on yourself," she says. "If you feel like, parang ang tagal… It took me 12 years to get to a point that I’m stable enough to talk about it, and actually have a heart to help people. Kung meron kang pinagdadaanang mabigat, it will take time. Parang ang mindset mo sarili na it’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint."
In her post on Instagram for the book, Reyes said: "I hope my story will help or inspire you to find a way out of your dark situation, whatever that may be." she adds, "Remember, you are not alone and there is always a way out. Laging may SOLUSYON.
