Travel as we knew it before the coronavirus pandemic is months, perhaps even years away. While that’s a bummer for many of us with itchy feet, you have to think about the people whose livelihoods depend on the travel industry: airlines, hotels and resorts, and other ancillary businesses whose earnings have all nosedived since quarantine restrictions have been imposed all over the country.

That has led many businesses in the tourism industry to pivot and try to offer something different in a bid not just to save themselves, but everyone else who depends on them to eke out a living.

Amorita Resort in Bohol is one such business. The luxury resort located on Alona Beach in Panglao Island in Bohol has been struggling since it closed at the start of community quarantine in mid-March. But its owners have found creative ways to keep busy and bring in much-needed revenue to keep its staff employed.

The resort has started offering food for delivery to diners in Metro Manila. The resort’s new restaurant called Turchino offers a selection of modern Italian favorites, such as pizzas, pastas, and steaks, and the proprietors have made some of the items, specifically the pizza, available outside of the resort.

The owners have turned their property near Bonifacio Global City into a test kitchen where a team of chefs develop the food that they will serve to guests in the resort. This property, called 9Saddle, now functions as a sort of “cloud kitchen” and events space, where customers can order their pizzas for delivery.

Made with “unbleached flour,” or natural flour untreated by synthetic additives, the pizzas are baked fresh in a brick oven at 9Saddle. Available flavors are Spicy Salsiccia (crumbled Italian sausage, mushroom, roasted garlic, pickled red chili), Margherita Moderna (oven-roasted tomato, pecorino, soft white cheese, fried basil), Salami (salami and melted mozzarella on tomato sauce), and Four Cheese (mozzarella, parmesan, gouda, mascarpone on white sauce). All pizzas are 10-inches in diameter and priced at P450 each.

Amorita reopened to visitors on September 18, adopting strict health measures in order to ensure the safety of its guests. The measures can be summarized into its four-point CARE program: Cleaning and Safety Protocols, Actions for Health and Well-Being, Responsible and Mindful Service, and Education and Advocacy. Initiatives include setting up sanitizing stations at the arrival areas and other locations around the property, round-the-clock inspection and cleaning of high-touch surfaces, holding of rooms in between reservations, and the introduction of digital restaurant menus to minimize physical contact.

The reopening coincided with the launch of Turchino (which is Italian for “deep blue”), but while it may still be a while before guests can finally step foot in Amorita once again, they can at least get a literal taste of the resort through its pizzas.
