Geralt Returns: All the Exciting Witcher Content Coming This Year
2021 is going to be the year The Witcher universe comes back with a bang.
Plenty was revealed during the first-ever WitcherCon, an online convention for fans of all things Witcher, from behind-the-scenes sound bites to an entire new game to be launched. The event, which was hosted by Netflix and video game developer CD Projekt Red, gave us a sneak peek into season two of Netflix’s The Witcher, as well as an in-depth look into the Polish developers behind the popular games.
We even got an hour-long interview with Henry Cavill himself, plus new footage including trailers, sneak peeks, and more. Here is all the exciting Witcher content coming your way in 2021.
1| The Witcher, Season 2
Release date: December 17
We now have a date, a teaser trailer, and all the title and logo reveals for all eight episodes of season two of Netflix’s The Witcher. Finally, after almost two years after the massive success of the first season, we’ll be seeing season two drop on Netflix at around Christmastime this year.
Season two will be loosely based on Blood of Elves, the first full-length novel in Andrzrej Zapkowski’s The Witcher saga. The books take place after the events of the short stories in The Last Wish, which was the basis of the first season of The Witcher. From what we can gather from the trailer and the book, we can guess that Ciri (and the viewers) will be taken to Kaer Morhen, the abandoned school for Witchers in the kingdom of Kaedwin. Here, we’ll see the runaway princess become a warrior like she is in the games.
2| The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf
Release date: August 23
By the time Ciri arrives in Kaer Morhen in the books, games, and show, the old keep is in ruins after it was sacked many, many years ago. It’s around this time that The Witcher franchise’s first film will take place. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is Netflix’s first full-length Witcher movie, and it’ll be an anime film, also produced by The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich.
The anime will follow the back story of Vesemir, the mentor of Geralt, who will also appear in season two of the live-action series.
3| The Witcher: Monster Slayer
Release date: July 21
In the gaming universe of Witcher, a new mobile game will be released this month: The Witcher: Monster Slayer. The game is an augmented reality game that will premiere on iOS and Android, no doubt in anticipation for the Netflix movie and series.
The game will allow users to hunt for monsters from the Witcher universe in their immediate vicinity. Think of it like Pokemon Go, but instead of looking for Poke Balls, you’ll be playing a Witcher and hunting mythological creatures in stead.
4| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC
Release date: “soon”
Another major win for gamers this year is the re-release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will arrive as a free upgrade for users who have already bought the game. The re-release is designed to be compatible with next-gen consoles, namely PS5, XBox Series X/S, and PC.
The re-release will also come with free downloadable content (DLC) in a mini-expansion pack that’s inspired by the Netflix show.
The games, books, and Netflix releases all exist in different universes, following on their own respective plotlines, but it’s clear that all three are coming together in their own version of the Conjunction of Spheres to give fans a richer watching and gaming experience.
