Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool Workout Routine Is Surprisingly Chill

Ryan Reynolds has two big movies in the works: The Hitman's Bodyguard, in which he and Samuel L. Jackson yell at each other while dodging bullets, and Deadpool 2, in which he dons a tight leather suit to kill baddies. Both require some degree of fitness and food consciousness for Reynolds to pull off, and he shared bits of his routine with Men's Health.

First, he doesn't tie himself down to a strict schedule. "[Don] has programs that I can access online because when I'm shooting, my hours are so erratic," he said of his trainer." I don't want to have to meet somebody at 4 in the morning in a dark gym. I just want to go when I can go."

This is far more flexible than, say, Hugh Jackman's prep for Logan. Jackman, who gets trolled by Reynolds on a regular basis, both in Deadpooland via social media, pounded 6,000 calories throughout all hours of the day and night. He also did an insane dehydration regimen where he drank three gallons of water a day until 36 hours before the shoot, when he stopped drinking anything at all. Reynolds's entirely sane prep is eating "clean, whole foods" every two or three hours to bulk up, and no midnight snacking. "Hugh Jackman has a dedication to his craft that I'm afraid I don't share. If I'm up at 2 in the morning, it's because something has gone terribly wrong," he said.

Nor does Reynolds pretend to be a competent, DIY cook. "I am not innovative in the kitchen," he said. "If I cook, you'll have a structure fire. The firemen will kick down our door, take my wife away, and give her a better life." And that's fine—there's strength in admitting weakness.
