Are You Brave Enough to Try This New Attraction in New York City?

One of the most iconic images of the 20th century is undoubtedly “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper.” You’ve likely seen it or are at least familiar with it: it’s the one with the building workers casually enjoying lunch while sitting on a steel beam perched high above New York City. It was taken in 1932 by an unknown photographer during the construction of the 69th floor of what was then called Rock Center’s RCA Building, or what is now called 30 Rockefeller Center. 

Now, over 90 years later, visitors can get the chance to recreate that iconic photo with a new attraction at 30 Rock. The Beam will let ticketholders sit on a recreated steel beam at the Top of the Rock at 30 Rockefeller Center, which will then be raised 12 feet up in the air and rotated 180 degrees so viewers can get eye-popping views of the city, including the city skyscrapers of and Central Park. By then, guests will be sitting about 800 feet above the streets of Manhattan.

To preserve the moment, guests will receive a digital image that recreates the famous “Lunch Atop a Skyscraper” photograph.

According to a news release, the classic photo was actually a publicity shot that was taken during the construction of the building. It was first published in the Sunday supplement of The New York Herald-Tribune on October 2, 1932.

The observation deck was the first attraction to open to the public following the building’s completion. It was closed in 1986 for extensive refurbishing and wouldn’t reopen until November 2005.

The Beam is part of Rockefeller Center’s plan to offer new attractions to visitors to its observation deck. There’s also a new dining experience at The Top of the Rock called the Weather Room that guests can check out after their Beam experience.

Reports say that, by next year, a new attraction will open also at 30 Rock. Located at the 70th floor, the so-called Sky Lift will hoist visitors 30 feet above the building’s uppermost rooftop on a circular glass platform.
