Manila Is 5th Most Risky City for Tourists, Says Forbes

Traveling is all fun and games, until you come across places where your safety could be at risk. Unfortunately, Manila is among the cities considered to be the least safe in the world, according to Forbes Advisor.

The Philippines’ capital scored 91.49 points in overall risk, making it the fifth riskiest city for international visitors. This was mainly attributed to Manila’s vulnerability to natural disasters. For Forbes, another factor that makes the city high-risk for tourists is the lack of safety measures, citing concerns on personal security.

The report analyzed 60 cities from all over the world using seven key metrics: personal security, health security, travel security, natural disaster risk, infrastructure security, crime risk, and digital security. Manila placed fifth in terms of risks to personal security; seventh in health; and ninth in both crime and infrastructure.

Other than the country’s capital, Caracas in Venezuela, Karachi in Pakistan, Yangon in Myanmar, and Lagos in Nigeria were in the top 5 dangerous cities for travelers. Caracas ranked the highest in health, travel, and crime risks; Karachi in personal security; Yangon in digital security; and Lagos in infrastructure security.

Singapore, on the other hand, was deemed the safest city for tourists, earning the best rating in travel safety. The Southeast Asian neighbor is also said to have the most sufficient health and disaster management measures globally. 

Tokyo, Japan and Toronto, Canada followed in the second and third spots, with 10.72 and 13.6 points in overall risk, respectively. Sydney in Australia and Zurich in Switzerland rounded up Forbes’ five safest cities.
