This ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona Is The Coolest Investment You Can Score Now

This extremely coveted Rolex is going under the hammer at Salcedo Auctions.

A few months back, we picked up on news that the iconic Rolex Daytona of actor and racecar driver Paul Newman had surfaced and was and going up for auction in New York. It was a Reference 6239—the one he actually wore—and is hailed by some as the most important vintage watch in the world. It was also the head of what may easily be the most coveted family of watches in history: the “Paul Newman” Rolex Daytonas, which are characterized by rare subdials with square hashmark tips and an art deco typeface for the numerals. Newman is said to have had an affinity for this specific type of Daytona, and so became the one to popularize it through the '70s and '80s.

But on this side of the world, the closest we’re going to get is in The Well Appointed Life by Salcedo Auctions later this month, where a Paul Newman Reference 6263 will be going under the hammer.

Like the original Reference 6239, this 6263 bears the black-on-white “panda” dial, and of course, the signature subdial characteristics. Based on the auction’s description, all lumes are intact, the dial is in pristine condition, and the bracelet comes with the original 271 end links. It was purchased in Singapore forty years ago and has since remained with the same family. It comes with a brochure which features a hand-written note from the owner saying that the watch was originally purchased for $752. At The Well Appointed Life, it’s expected to go for P7 to P10 million.

But before you shield your eyes from the glaring starting price, consider that few other watches have seen a higher rise in value over the last 20 years than the Paul Newman Daytonas. In 1992, a Reference 6239 of this sort would have gone for around $9,000. In 2013, one went for $75,000. Not a bad investment, if you’d think about it, especially considering that you’d get to own one of the coolest watches of all time. But then again, that’s only if you actually have the money to think about it at all.

Other rare and collectible Daytonas will be going under the hammer at The Well Appointed Life as well, including a Reference 6265 in yellow gold and another Reference 6265 in stainless steel. These are among an array of incredible timepieces in the auction’s catalogue.

Preview starts at The Gallery of The Peninsula Manila on Friday, 15 September and runs through 22 September, 10am-8pm. For inquiries email [email protected] or phone + 63 917 894 6550.
