The Baggy Trousers Club: Why Wide and Loose Pants Are Still Big

The wider the pants the saucier the outfit.

Growing up, I was made to believe that one’s trousers or bottoms should always be close to tailor-made or even skinny fitting to look half decent. Given, I grew up mostly in the 2010s when baggier outfits were a thing of a not-so-distant past.

This all changed after I gave in to the resurgence of the wide-fitting, parachute pants, pleated trousers and casual-wear meta.

Giving in to the comfort and laid-back ethos of having an inordinate amount of breathing room for your ankles was as pivotal as the day I got my first pair of decent loafers. I never looked back.

The baggy pants cultural renaissance we are experiencing traces its roots back to in the 1990s and the early 2000s, when a slew of pockets and oversized clothing were the norm.

I got a pair of voluminous parachute pants from Zara that were slightly too big for me but I insisted on wearing them any chance I got.

Parachute pants, particularly of the cargo variant, are usually paired with a fitted shirt and athletic sneakers which are usually retro-inspired.

I then moved on to wider-fitting pleated trousers for a more versatile and chic option to pair with my modest shoe closet rotation made up of two pairs of penny loafers and an Asics GT-2160 to balance out sporty with preppy.

All About The Flow: The Art Of Pulling Off Wide-Leg Pants

The oversized cargo/ parachute pants lineup is widely seen as the in-fashion, quintessential comfort casual Gen Z outfit.

But if you dive deeper into the wide pants family, one could find dressier and more chic options that could replace your tailored skinny slacks.

The name of the game is proportions and framing when putting together an outfit tied together by baggy pants. You should generally try to balance out how baggy your top is to your trousers, but there isn’t really a golden ratio that needs to be followed like scripture.

However, a good rule of thumb is to offset the bagginess of the bottoms by cropping out your top to achieve a one-is-to-three proportion to accentuate and exaggerate the length of the pants.

You can achieve these cleaner proportions by taking your shirt to the tailor to chop off a few inches, or by doing it yourself, if you’re handy with a pair of scissors. You also have the option of just tucking your shirt in for a preppier and more chic look with baggy bottoms.

There should also be a balance in the formality of your footwear and the technicality of your trousers.

Parachute pants with a million pockets are typically harder to look good in with a pair of Bass Weejun Loafers, compared to if you wore the appropriate wide pleated trousers.

If you want a good middle ground between straight fitting pants and these unapologetically baggy trousers, you may want to consider barrel pants.

These give a twist on wider pants as its silhouette is recognized by its fusion of the structure of straight cut pants and the flowiness of loose pants, giving it a slight curve.

The nostalgia-driven ethos of baggier clothing, youthful accessories like chains and rings from the 1990s and the Y2K era is likely to stay for the foreseeable future.Ā
