5 Ways To Make Your Grooming Routine More Sustainable

Save your face while saving the planet.

Monday, 7:30am. A man sways lazily in front of the bathroom sink, yawning and rubbing his eyes. Glancing up at the mirror, he’s met by the reflection of someone with a lot on their mind. “What am I actually going to present in today’s meeting? Is there anything in the fridge for dinner tonight? Did that bald patch get bigger? What night is MasterChef on?”

There’s one quandary, however, that’s much lower down on his list of priorities. The question of his imminent grooming session’s impact on the world we all share, which raises issues such as excessive use of plastic and non-sustainable ingredients.

To put it right, we need to fundamentally rebuild our approach to grooming from the ground upand it's easier than you think. From using natural products to being conscious of packaging, here we share some top tips for making your grooming routine sustainable.

Avoid unnecessary plastic

Plastic cotton buds, razors made from and packaged in far too much plastic, those little toothbrushes from airport vending machines… these things may help us to freshen up in a hurry, but long-term they spell bad news for the planet.

Anything designed to be thrown in the bathroom bin after a use or two should be eliminated from your grooming armoury. Instead, shop for quality products that are built with the environment in mind, such as Bulldog's Original Bamboo Razor. It’s an easy swap and means you can get a quality shave while focusing on the environment. Win win.

Don’t waste water

Oceans are full of it and it’s miraculously pumped into our homes at the simple twist of a tap. Hell, 71 percent per cent of our bodies are made of the stuff. With that much water everywhere, it can be easy to forget that this magical liquid is actually a finite resource that should be conserved.

Managing wastewater can be as straightforward as turning the tap off while you're brushing your teeth, or running shallower baths. However, if you’re really serious about reining in your usage, you can also invest in a water-saving gadget like an eco shower head, which can dramatically reduce wasted water with extended use.

Be conscious of packaging

Skincare companies tend to use a lot of plastic packaging. That plastic packaging is usually made using non-renewable fossil fuels. This releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. With that in mind, one of the most eco-savvy moves you can make to improve your grooming routine is to really look at what goes into a product’s packaging before deciding to buy it.

Bulldog Skincare, for example, is reducing its carbon footprint by packing its grooming goodies in tubes made from sugarcane plastic. It’s renewable, needs only natural rainfall to grow and can be recycled anywhere plastic can.

That’s not all. If we take their Original Moisturiser as an example, using sugarcane plastic instead of a standard fossil fuel based plastic means that the carbon emissions per tube are a lovely 19 percent lower.

Check the label

Before we all started playing with our phones on the loo, it wasn’t uncommon to pick up the shampoo bottle in order to get a literary fix. Start doing that again. It doesn’t have to be while you’re on the thronein fact, preferably when you’re still in the shopbut paying attention to what’s in the bottle will help to keep both skin and planet healthy.

Bulldog Skincare's Shower Gel range is an ideal example of good label reads, not only are they cruelty free and use 100 percent natural fragrance, but they come packaged in a bottle made from 100 percent recycled plastic. Who knows, you might have used the plastic before.

Buy from eco-conscious brands

Last but not least, do your research when deciding what to stock your bathroom cabinet with. Align yourself with brands that actually practise what they preachbrands that commit to recycling, planting trees and working with renewable materials and energy sources in their production. It’s a small change, but one that can have a big effect on the future of our planet if we all follow suit.

Whether you have regular, dry, sensitive, oily or mature skin, Bulldog is here to help you look and feel your best
