The Heritage Porto Mechanical is the piece your grandpa wanted.

In this modern age, vintage is a far-reaching concept. No longer just the stuff that preceded the Nineties, the Noughties have now been co-opted as 'throwback culture.' Yes, the teens-of-now have taken to ripping off tender years past that still seem so recent. Your culture very much is their costume. But some watch marques prefer the years of proper vintage, the grandfather sort, in which photos were black and white and people washed in tin baths—and Tissot's latest release can still remember the glory days.

The new Heritage Porto Mechanical is another nod back to a classic piece of the 1910s. But unlike a similar revival (the first-gen Heritage Porto of 2001), this Swiss-made piece is even closer to the original article.

A tonneau case—the proper watchy term for when the body of a watch is barrel-shaped—was first pioneered in the early Twenties as a counter to tradition, with a curved composition built to better fit the contours of the wrist. What's more, the dial itself is the sort of Art Nouveau design you'd find on very suspicious bottles of French absinthe from the pre-war period, and the movement itself was something Tissot was fond of. So much so, that you can find a similar aesthetic on some of the earliest watches produced by the Le Locle manufacture (particularly the scrolled typographic logo).

The good news: It's the sort of vintage that's classically handsome. The even better news: The Heritage Porto Mechanical performs much better than its forefather. Inside, you'll find a slim self-winding ETA 7001 calibre (reliable, trusted, Volkswagen-like) that holds enough juice for a 42-hour power reserve with enough left over to fuel a small seconds hand at six o'clock. Go quartz too, and there's an even simpler option at a more competitive price tag.
