Today I Learned: The Mazda MX-5 is Celebrating 10 Years in the Philippines
The fourth-generation Mazda MX-5, which many enthusiasts call the “ND Miata,” is marking its 10th anniversary in the Philippines this year. While sports cars aren’t exactly flooding the streets in this country, the MX-5 has become somewhat of a phenomenon for being one that is relatively accessible, reliable, stylish, and joyful to drive.
However, to truly appreciate the ND’s success, we first need to look back to where its story began.
From NA to ND: A Roadster’s Evolution
The MX-5 story started in 1989 with the NA, a lightweight, open-top roadster inspired by the classic British sports cars of the 1960s. It brought back something the industry had largely forgotten: simplicity and driving purity. With pop-up headlights, a rev-happy four-cylinder, and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the NA wasn’t about raw power, it was about the connection.
The NB (1998) refined the formula with a sleeker shape, more power, and a slightly more mature demeanor. The NC (2005) grew in size and put on some weight, adding comfort and safety features while keeping the essence intact. The NC generation (2005–2015) was the first Mazda MX-5 to offer a Power Retractable Hardtop (PRHT).

The ND arrived in the country in 2015. It wasn’t just the opening of a new chapter, but a conscious return to the “lightweight ethos.” Shedding unnecessary mass, the ND delivered sharper handling, cleaner lines, and Mazda’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design language. Most importantly, it embraced Jinba-Ittai, or the philosophy of horse and rider moving as one.
The ND struck an immediate chord with Filipino driving enthusiasts. As of June 2025, 1,563 units have been sold in the country, split almost evenly between the classic Soft Top and Retractable Fastback variants. This makes the Philippines the top MX-5 market in Asia outside Japan. The formula’s timeless appeal hit a peak in 2023, the model’s best sales year ever with 205 units sold, but from the looks of it, its 2025 sales may match or surpass that milestone.
One important strategy by Mazda Philippines in being able to sustain this decade-long appeal is the offering of special editions that helped keep the excitement alive, including 30th, 35th, and 100th anniversary models that were all globally recognized. Two Philippine-exclusive versions were introduced: the MCP 25th Anniversary Edition honors the Miata Club of the Philippines, featuring bespoke trim and limited availability, and the Miata Cup 23rd Anniversary Edition, which is track-focused and equipped with Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), DSC-Track mode, and an Asymmetric LSD.
The ND’s success comes down to a few unshakable pillars. First, is its approachable performance, thanks to its 184 PS 2.0L Skyactiv-G engine mated to a slick 6-speed manual (or 6-speed automatic), which offers just the right amount of speed without intimidation. Second is a balanced chassis with an ideal weight distribution and a sub-ton curb weight that creates handling magic on both twisty roads and even on racetracks.
Thirdly, the ND design ages well, blending modern lines with classic proportions, and ensuring it looks as good today as it did in 2015 for both the Soft Top and Retractable Fastback variants.
Lastly, Mazda Philippines nurtured a passionate community of owners of all generations through club activities, motorsport events, and owner drives. For many, buying an MX-5 didn’t just mean owning a car, it was like joining a family,. As Mazda Philippines President Steven Tan puts it: “The success of the MX-5 is thanks to the unparalleled performance that brings fun and joy to owners, whether in the city or on the racetrack.”
Looking Ahead: The Next Generation
Mazda has confirmed the MX-5 will live on into the next generation, with engineers committed to preserving the lightweight, front-engine, rear-drive formula. The challenge and opportunity, lies in integrating electrification without losing the “smiles per mile” magic. We expect the next MX-5 to explore hybrid or mild-hybrid solutions for efficiency and emissions compliance, paired with advanced chassis tuning to maintain its playful dynamics, something it has began with its SUV models already.
If history is any guide, Mazda will find a way to evolve while staying true to the spirit that made the NA a cult classic and the ND a global best-seller. For now, the ND’s 10-year milestone in the Philippines is more than just an anniversary, it’s proof that joy on four wheels still matters, and that “Miata is always the answer (M.I.A.T.A.)” isn’t just a meme, it’s a brand promise.
