We may not be aware of it all the time, but many of us have developed brand loyalty over the years. We pick up the same brand of toothpaste or spaghetti sauce, we go to the same gas station to fill up, look for the same brand of sneakers or t-shirt, and go eat at the same fast-food outlets. Once we find what we like, we establish a connection and we often stick to it, sometimes for a very, very long time.
It's the same with automobiles. Car enthusiasts often have a brand they love and will almost always choose when buying a new model. At the same time, they also have car brands that they like the least, for one reason or another.
A study wanted to find out the most and least loved car brands in every country in the world. The Clunker Junker used the AI sentiment tool HuggingFace to reveal positive and negative sentiment about car brands based on posts on Twitter. It’s a revealing look at which cars have gotten the love from consumers, and which ones need to do a bit (or a lot) more work.

In the Philippines, it seems that the most loved car brand here is McLaren, the British supercar maker. On the other end of the spectrum, the brand that has gotten the least amount of love from Filipinos based on the study is Jeep.

Worldwide, the most-loved car brand is Elon Musk’s baby, Tesla, which topped the list in 21 countries including Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. However, the EV manufacturer that currently has a market value of about $1 trillion—more than Toyota, VW, Daimler, Ford, and GM combined—also ranked as the least-loved in 16 countries.
Ferrari topped the list of most-loved car brand in 10 countries, including Spain and the United Kingdom, while the country of its origin—Italy—chose love Mercedes-Benz the most. Japanese car brands Toyota and Suzuki are big in Belgium and Singapore, respectively, but in Japan, the most loved brand is Germany’s Porsche.
Looking at the least-loved car brands, Ferrari also makes an appearance as it’s number one in 18 countries, including the Netherlands, the U.K., Iceland, Bolivia, and Uruguay. But, unfortunately for American car company Ford, it is the least loved car brand in 20 countries, making it the world’s most unloved brand.
Even Tesla has its haters; it’s the least loved car brand in 16 countries, including China and Sweden.

Methodology
The Clunker Junker started with a list of the world’s biggest and most popular car brands then pulled all geotagged tweets mentioning these brands from every country. It them built a list of terms related to driving to ensure these tweets were talking about the cars in question. AI sentiment analysis algorithm HuggingFace was then used to label each tweet as being negative or positive. Tweets that have more than a 50 percent chance of being negative or positive were tagged as a negative or positive tweet, respectively. The data was collected in March 2022.
