These Are All the Toyota and Lexus Cars on Display at Japan Motor Show 2023

Tokyo: The inaugural Japan Motor Show—what used to be called the Tokyo Motor Show—is happening this week here until November 5, 2023. Over 400 companies, brands, and businesses are taking part in the biennial event that is making a return after four years. 

Of course, front and center are the carmakers, who are exhibiting not just car models but technologies that will shape the way people will move in the years ahead. Save for three foreign brands—BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and BYD—all the top Japanese marques are represented, led by arguably the biggest of them all, Toyota.

Toyota itself has made it clear that it is taking a more wholistic and diverse approach to the electrification issue. Rather than just focusing solely on a one-size-fits-all solution, the car giant is focusing on the needs of different markets, and offering ways to respond to each one in a meaningful, practical way.

It remains to be seen if this strategy is going to work in the long run. In the interim, Toyota and its premium unit Lexus did present a lineups of some pretty exciting car models that we will for sure be hearing more of in the months and years ahead.

1| FT-Se

Front and center at the Toyota booth is the Toyota FT-Se concept, a gorgeous battery electric sports car that carries the brand’s GR (Gazoo Racing) Sport tag. Toyota says the car has a full-digital cockpit that offers intuitive controls and a more immersive driving experience.

Another BEV concept, the FT-3e is also a major pillar in Toyota’s aspirations toward achieving full carbon neutrality. The exterior design combines both advanced styling and aesthetics, while digital displays running from the lower side body to the upper door provide information, including battery charge, onboard temperature, and interior air quality when the driver approaches the car.

3| IMV-0 concept

Toyota is hell-bent on providing mobility solutions for all possible sectors and markets, and the IMV-0 is another offering in this thrust. The fully electric pick-up is fully customizable, allowing it to transform into an infinite number of use cases for owners. The brand says The IMV-0 supports future mobility lifestyles by offering the potential for further customization, from business to leisure applications.

4| Kayoibako

In his speech, Toyota President and CEO Koji Sato explained that in Toyota’s car plants, configurable shipping containers called to transport parts that connect their worksites are called kayoibako. This is what they chose to name a new BEV concept that, like the IMV-0, is fully customizable for many different uses. Toyota says it imagines the Kayoibako as Toyota a “quality base unit of mobility,” that focuses on interior and exterior packaging and affordability. 

5| Century

Toyota officially unveiled the new Century model, a premium chauffeur-driven model, in September. Toyota calls the design signal “stately grandeur,” with features that include an engraved phoenix emblem and mirror finish. The aim is to deliver ‘freedom in motion?the ultimate freedom of movement’ to even more people,” Toyota says. 

6| Crown

Toyota’s classic Crown model has undergone a major facelift, and alongside the base model, the Crown Sport is also on display at the JMS. Launched earlier this month, the Crown Sport Hybrid EV model is an SUV that offers an agile and sporty driving experience.

7| Land Cruiser Se

If you’ve ever wondered what an electric Land Cruiser would look like, this is your answer. Still possessing the characteristics of the classic Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser Se offers the high-torque driving characteristics of a BEV with an elegant and stylish design and enhanced with a three-row interior. Equipped with an electric powertrain, you can just imagine the experience driving this off-road. 

8| EPU

The EPU is a next-generation mid-size pickup truck concept that is also fully electric. It’s just over five meters long with a double cab design and can support a broad range of uses. Toyota says the EPU also has a low center of gravity for superior handling stability and ride comfort. 

9| Juu

The Juu is an electric wheelchair concept that offers users a new way to travel unassisted. A nifty feature is that, when climbing or descending a stairway, the two large powered wheels (or main wheels) on the Juu’s sides traverse the steps, while the retractable tail flips down from behind the backrest to prevent tipping and stabilize the wheelchair. The drive system also employs motors used in cars. 

10| Space Mobility Prototype

Yes, Toyota has its own “moon buggy.” The prototype is electric-powered, can navigate boulders up to 50 cm tall and can even climb slopes of up to 25 degrees. According to Toyota, the technology honed through this prototype will be used in space mobility vehicles such as the Luna Cruiser.

Lexus 

1| LF-ZC

The LF-ZC is a battery electric sedan concept that is scheduled to go into production and launched in 2026. Lexus says the LF-ZC symbolizes Lexus’ electrification journey, with sleek proportions, a low center of gravity, spacious cabin and design that blends functionality and aesthetics. 

2| LF-ZL

Meanwhile, the LF-ZL, is Lexus’ flagship battery electric SUV concept. Taking “smart” to a new level, the model’s driving experience will be tailored to each individual, with the car taking hints from the driver’s habits and making personalized suggestions. Both the LF-ZL and the LF-ZC feature a next-generation fully digital intelligent cockpit and are equipped with Lexus’ proprietary Arene OS interface software, that enables progressive feature updates to keep pace with the evolution of safety systems and multimedia functions.
