Last June, we announced that the Volkswagen Kombi will be making a comeback in the Philippines. Well, the Volkswagen Kombi Highline, the brand’s top-of-the-line variant, is finally here.

Many of us fondly remember the original Kombi, which became a part of our local automotive culture from the ‘60s well into the ‘80s. Six generations later, the new Multivan Kombi redefines this highly versatile transport with a topline variant multivan catering to the premium market.

With over 13 million units sold, Volkswagen Philippines says the world’s bestselling van is a re-envisioned icon, an updated top-of-the-line Multivan Kombi that appeals to executives, businessmen and other highly successful people thanks to the Multivan Kombi’s luxurious interior, safety features and amenities.

Inside the Multivan Kombi, the seats are upholstered with Nappa leather, from the front seat to the dual swivel second row captain seats to the third row seats. It has a collapsible multi-function table in between the second and third row that makes the Multivan Kombi an ideal executive transport and even a place of business for face-to-face meetings. Adding to its convenience are its electric dual sliding doors that allow for ease of entry and exit, plus a power tailgate that offers hands-free opening and closing. The three-zone Climatronic Air Conditioning ensures optimum comfort for passengers throughout the entire cabin.

Safety features like LED daytime running lights (DRL), headlights and taillights, and drive aids like rear camera and park distance control (PDC) and park assist feature enables the driver to easily fit into tight parking slots. It has a total of six airbags (front, side, and head curtain) plus Driver Alert, Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), and Hill Start Assist (HSA). There’s also the one-of-a-kind Crosswind Assist feature of the ESP that automatically applies gentle, course-corrective braking whenever strong crosswinds are encountered and the van is running above 80 kph, keeping the vehicle stable and running within its lane.

Powering the Multivan Kombi is a 2.0-liter TDI engine rated at 150 PS of power and 340 Nm of torque mated with a seven-speed DSG transmission with Tiptronic function. An intelligent Driver Profile Select with Dynamic Chassis Control helps maintain optimal drive practices with its option to customize individual settings based on steering, engine, cruise control, and air-conditioning parameters as well as offering a choice among drive modes: Normal, Sport, Comfort, or Eco.

What’s great about this premium German car brand is that it carries a lesser maintenance and ownership cost compared to its competitors. Volkswagen Philippines says the cost is about 22 percent less compared to other luxury vans. The vehicle is backed up by a two-year warranty coverage, two-year spare parts warranty, and a 12-year no-through corrosion—all with unlimited mileage. You also need to spend a once-a-year visit for preventative maintenance service at the dealership. These dealerships also offer free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.
