Five-Year-Old Boy Pulled Over While Driving SUV on a Highway

Highway patrol officers stopped an SUV as it was swerving on a highway in the US state of Utah last Monday, May 4 (Tuesday in Manila). When they peered inside the vehicle they were astonished to discover a five-year-old boy in the driver’s seat.

According to a tweet by the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), the boy, who was not identified, had an argument with his mother who refused to buy him a Lamborghini. The boy then decided to take the car and drive himself to California and buy the ultra luxury car himself.

His story is that he left home after an argument with Mom, in which she told him she would not buy him a Lamborghini. He decided he'd take the car and go to California to buy one himself. He might have been short on the purchase amount, as he only had $3 dollars in his wallet.

In the dashcam video uploaded to YouTube by the UHP, the boy can be heard telling the officer that his sister lives in California, and he was trying to get to her.

A report in the New York Times said the boy’s parents were at work and that the keys to the vehicle were left on a hook at home. They said the boy had not driven before and that it was the first time he’d done anything like this.

At first, he thought the boy appeared to be eight or nine years old. “But he insisted he was 5, and his family confirmed he’s five years old and he will be six next month,” the trooper said.

The report also said that, according to the trooper who pulled over the boy, he was sitting on the front edge of the seat “so that he could reach the brake pedal.” It was not clear how well he could see through the windshield. The trooper helped the child to put the car into park position and to shut it down.

A Utah district attorney said the parents will not face charges, according to a follow-up report in the NYT.

A UHP investigation found no “indication that these parents had done anything improper.“There was no evidence of any kind of neglect or inappropriate action on the part of the parents here,” the NYT quoted the district attorney as saying.
