1| Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga
Hiroyuki Sanada's portrayal of Yoshii Toranaga, lord of the expansive Kanto region, stands as a cornerstone of the series. Toranaga, inspired by the historical figure Tokugawa Ieyasu, is depicted as a formidable and strategic leader, deeply embedded in the political machinations of feudal Japan.
Born in Tokyo in 1960, Sanada's career spans several decades, during which he has portrayed a wide array of characters. Before Shogun, he has appeared in The Twilight Samurai (2002) as Seibei Iguchi, Avengers: Endgame (2019) as Akihiko, John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) as Shimazu, and Westworld (2018-2020) as Musashi, proving his versatility and appeal in both Japanese and Western cinema. He was also in five episodes of Lost (2010).
2| Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne
Cosmo Jarvis takes on the role of John Blackthorne, an English navigator who finds himself shipwrecked and entangled in the local power struggles as he becomes a pivotal player in Toranaga's plans. Blackthorne's character is inspired by William Adams, the first Englishman to reach Japan.
Jarvis's performance as Sebastian in Lady Macbeth (2016) received widespread praise for its intensity and depth. His recent work includes a critically acclaimed role as Terry Rose in The Evening Hour (2020). He was also in three episodes of Peaky Blinders (2019).

4| Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige
Tadanobu Asano takes on the role of Lord Kashigi Yabushige, a cunning and ruthless daimyo with his own agenda. He is the lord of Izu within the Kanto region. Kanai is a rising star in Japanese cinema. While Shogun marks a significant role for him internationally, he has garnered recognition in Japan for his work in Labyrinth of Cinema (2019) and Oliver na Inu, (Gosh!!) Konoyarou (2021).
6| Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari
Takehiro Hira portrays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant who has become a powerful bush?, a member of the Council of Regents and the Protector of Osaka Castle.
Hira is a seasoned Japanese actor with a diverse filmography. His notable roles include Kenzo Mori in Giri/Haji (2019), where he was recognized with a BAFTA nomination; Kazu in Lost Girls and Love Hotels (202); and Kazunori Yamauchi in Gran Turismo (2023).

8| Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Hirokatsu, a.k.a. "Buntaro"
Shinnosuke Abe portrays Toda Hirokatsu, also known as "Buntaro," a samurai warrior ruthlessly loyal to his lord, Toranaga, and his father, Hiromatsu. Buntaro serves as Mariko's husband and initially distrusts Blackthorne's presence. However, his character grapples with his duty to his family and the political turmoil surrounding Toranaga's rise to power.
Abe is a versatile Japanese actor who made his screen debut in Lovers' Kiss in 2003. He previously played roles in Rurouni Kenshin (2021), Kingdom (2019), and Day and Night (2019).
9| Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu
Tokuma Nishioka plays the role of Toda Hiromatsu, Buntaro's formidable father and Toranaga's hardened general. Hiromatsu represents the more traditional samurai values, clashing with the changing political landscape. Kura is a young Japanese actor and model from Osaka. His previous appearances include Spaghetti Code Love (2021), where he played a lead role; By the Window (2022), which won the Audience Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival; and Followers (2020), which is on Netflix.

Doguchi started out as a model for Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama. She later starred in director Kiyoshi Kurosawa's film The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl (1985); and has appeared internationally in Juzo Itami's Tampopo (1985) and Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (1997).
Shogun premiered on Disney+ on February 27.
