Emperador Allocates P6.5 Billion to Expand Brandy Business This Year

Liquor producer Emperador, Inc. (EMP) has allocated P6.5 billion for its capital expenditures to grow its distillery this year. According to the company, the investment is expected to double its current production capacity while catering to the rising demand for premium whiskies in the Philippines.

EMP is a holding company under the umbrella of the Alliance Group of billionaire businessman Andrew Tan. It operates an integrated business of manufacturing, bottling, and distributing distilled spirits and other alcoholic beverages from the Philippines and Europe. Through Emperador Distillers, Inc. (EDI), the company has established its identity in the liquor scene—claiming to have launched the first brandy label in the country with Emperador Brandy in 1990.

A chunk of the manufacturer's capital for 2024 will go to the upgrading of its machinery and equipment, specifically for its brandy and distilled spirits. Apart from this, Emperador says it is stepping up support for environmental initiatives in order to improve efficiency in its operations while promoting sustainability. Such include efforts from Scotland-headquartered alcoholic beverage company Whyte and Mackay to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.

EMP acquired Whyte and Mackay—the fifth largest Scotch whisky producer in the world—in 2014, making its foray into the global Scotch industry. This was followed by the strengthening of its brandy and sherry business through its acquisition of global spirits company Beam Suntory (Bodegas Fundador). With the P6.5-billion investment, EMP may be gearing up to add another alcoholic beverage company under its belt this year.

Emperador’s liquor portfolio comprises local and foreign brands, including Emperador Light, Emperador Deluxe, Andy Player Whisky, Smirnoff Mule, The Bar, The Dalmore and Jura Scotch single malt whiskies, as well as Fundador.
